Professor Tijjani Muhammad Bande is an ABUSITE and the new UN General Assembly President.
His appointment was announced by María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, outgoing president of UNGA at a press conference in Abuja after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
Bande becomes the second Nigerian to be appointed President of UNGA after Mr. Joseph Nanven Garba who held the position between 1989 and 1990.
Bande until his appointment was the permanent representative of Nigeria to UN.
Early life and education
Muhammad-Bande was born on 7 December 1957 in Zagga town which is in present Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria. He attended Ahmadu Bello University for undergraduate studies where he received Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 1979 before proceeding to Boston University where he graduated with Master of Arts in Political Science in 1981.
Bande taught at Usman Danfodio University as a graduate assistant in 1980 and rose to the rank of Professor in 1998. Between 2004 and 2009, he served as vice-chancellor of the university before moving to hold the position of Director-General of Nigeria’s National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies from 2010 to 2016.
